Japanese Katana by Masatsune – Imperial Japanese Army Commissioned Swordsmith
This Japanese katana is believed to have been forged before 1943 (Showa 18) by Masatsune, a swordsmith who worked in Daimoncho, Seki City, Gifu Prefecture.
Masatsune was recognized for his swordmaking skills and is said to have been appointed as an Imperial Japanese Army Commissioned Swordsmith (Rikugun Jumei Tosho), a designation awarded to selected swordsmiths entrusted with producing swords for the Japanese military.
Following Japan's defeat in World War II in 1945, the Allied Occupation authorities imposed strict restrictions on Japanese sword production. Many traditional swordsmiths were forced to abandon their craft, and Masatsune is believed to have been among those who retired from swordmaking during this period.
As a surviving example of Japanese swordmaking from the wartime Showa period, this katana represents an important chapter in the history of Japanese sword craftsmanship.
Its historical background and association with a wartime swordsmith make it an interesting piece for collectors of Japanese swords and military history.
