Ikkanshi Tadatsuna is especially admired for two distinctive aspects of his work: his expressive hamon and his exceptionally refined horimono (blade carvings).
In his earlier works, Tadatsuna followed the style of the first-generation Tadatsuna, often producing choji-midare (clove-shaped irregular temper patterns) in a bright nioi-based hamon. As his style developed, his choji became more dynamic and varied, frequently showing elongated ashi extending deeply into the hardened edge. These lively and elegant choji patterns became an important characteristic of his mature work.
In his later period, Tadatsuna also produced more flamboyant hamon, including large notare and wave-like patterns influenced by the famous toran-midare style associated with Tsuda Echizen no Kami Sukehiro. His hamon combines technical precision with a strong decorative quality, making his blades immediately appealing as works of art.
Tadatsuna was also particularly renowned for his horimono. Unlike the first and third generations, the second-generation Tadatsuna was an accomplished carver, and his blade carvings are regarded as one of the defining features of his work.
His horimono were carefully composed to harmonize with the shape and proportions of the blade rather than simply serving as decoration. Their refined execution adds greatly to the artistic presence of his swords, and finely carved examples by Ikkanshi Tadatsuna are especially prized by collectors.
