Omi no Kami Fujiwara Tsuguhiro (近江守藤原継広)

Omi no Kami Fujiwara Tsuguhiro was a Japanese swordsmith active from the early to mid-Edo period. He was based in Echizen Province (present-day Fukui Prefecture) and studied under the third-generation Echizen Yasutsugu, a prominent swordsmith of the Echizen Shimosaka school. He was granted the honorary title of Omi no Kami.

First-Generation Tsuguhiro

The first-generation Tsuguhiro was active around the Kanbun era (1661–1673). Although originally based in Fukui, Echizen Province, he later moved to Zeze in Omi Province (present-day Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) and also forged swords in Edo.

Second-Generation Tsuguhiro

The second-generation Tsuguhiro was active around the Genroku era (1688–1704). He continued the traditions and craftsmanship of his predecessor, carrying on the swordmaking techniques of the Echizen school.

Battle Scars (Homare-kizu)

The spine (mune) of the blade bears three distinct cut marks, traditionally referred to as homare-kizu (honorable battle scars). One is relatively large, while the other two are smaller.

There is also a chip in the cutting edge near the tip (kissaki), which may have been caused during combat.

These marks suggest that the sword may have seen actual use in battle, adding a fascinating historical dimension to the blade.

Unusual Inscription – Echizen no Kuni Masasaka (越前国正坂)

The reverse side of the tang (nakago) bears the inscription "Echizen no Kuni Masasaka" (越前国正坂).

Interestingly, a close examination of the inscription strongly suggests that the character 正 (masa) was deliberately modified from 下 (shimo), originally forming the name Shimosaka (下坂).

In the standard form of the character 正, the third stroke is horizontal and does not extend downward. However, in this inscription, the original downward stroke of 下 remains clearly visible, with two additional strokes apparently added to transform it into 正.

This unusual modification appears to have been intentional rather than a simple variation in calligraphy.

Although the exact reason remains unknown, it is possible that the character 正 was chosen to convey a sense of legitimacy, authenticity, or rightful lineage, as the character can carry meanings such as "correct," "proper," or "legitimate."

This intriguing detail makes the inscription particularly interesting from a historical perspective.
