[Sword Type] Tanto - Moroha-zukuri (Double-Edged Blade)

[Mei] Bishu Osafune Munemitsu
Accompanied by a Kozuka Signed Kanayama Fujiwara Kiyonaga

[Blade length(Cutting edge)] 18.8 cm

This distinctive Japanese tantō features an unusual double-edged blade, known as moroha-zukuri, signed Bishū Osafune Munemitsu.
The Munemitsu name was used by several generations of swordsmiths associated with the Bizen tradition.

Unlike conventional Japanese tantō, which generally have a single cutting edge, this blade is sharpened along both sides. Its nearly straight profile, symmetrical pointed tip, and pronounced central ridge give it a distinctive dagger-like appearance.

Both sides of the blade feature carefully formed longitudinal grooves running along the central portion. These grooves emphasize the blade's symmetrical construction and create an elegant geometric appearance.

The tantō is accompanied by an attractive koshirae featuring a coordinated set of metal fittings decorated with nanako-ji, a traditional Japanese metalworking technique in which the surface is covered with countless tiny, closely spaced raised dots resembling fish roe.

The blade shows signs of age, including surface wear, fine scratches, and evidence of previous polishing. Please examine the detailed photographs carefully to assess its condition.

The nakago-ana (tang opening) of the tsuba is considerably larger than the tang itself. As a result, the tsuba is extremely loose and moves significantly when the tantō is drawn from its saya.

However, when the tantō is fully sheathed, the tsuba is held securely in place by the kozuka. In this position, the tsuba fits firmly without any noticeable movement or rattling.
