A Mysterious Cross Hidden Within the Wisteria Crest
The cuirass of this armor bears an ascending wisteria crest, with the blossoms facing upward. What makes the design particularly unusual is the presence of a cross-shaped symbol—an element not normally found in this type of family crest.
In a standard downward-facing wisteria crest, the central branch divides upward into three sections. Although this may resemble a cross at first glance, the two side branches curve upward and do not form a true cruciform shape.
If the conventional crest had simply been turned upside down to create an ascending-wisteria design, the three branches should point downward. However, the symbol on this armor appears deliberately arranged in the form of a cross.
Further evidence can be found in the decorative paper labels attached to the helmet and several other components of the armor. Hidden within their grass-like patterns are additional motifs that also appear to resemble crosses.
Taken together, these highly unusual details suggest that the Christian symbolism may have been intentional. It is therefore possible that this armor once belonged to a Christian samurai, or to someone who wished to discreetly incorporate Christian imagery into the design.
While its exact history cannot be confirmed, the concealed cross motifs give this armor a particularly intriguing and mysterious character.
